Toronto, September 4, 2025 — The Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) proudly unveils its major new exhibition Saints, Sinners, Lovers and Fools: 300 Years of Flemish Masterworks, a sweeping journey through the artistic brilliance of the Southern Netherlands (modern-day Flanders) from 1400 to 1700.
Featuring over 80 exceptional artworks and historical objects, the exhibition spans the Middle Ages, Renaissance, and Baroque periods, showcasing the evolution of Flemish visual culture. Visitors will encounter masterpieces by some of the most celebrated artists in European history:
Peter Paul Rubens – known for his dynamic compositions and dramatic use of color
Anthony van Dyck – a portraitist who captured the elegance and complexity of aristocratic life
Hans Memling – a master of devotional art and refined detail
Through the lens of “saints, sinners, lovers, and fools,” the exhibition explores how art reflected and shaped the spiritual, emotional, and social dimensions of Flemish society. It invites audiences to contemplate timeless themes of morality, desire, devotion, and folly.
